Kathy, if you were as old as I am,you would know that it was not wise to "pop" the clutch. That was not a neccesary action to start stick shift car. After you got a willing helper, or not so willing, as was the case when I needed Ginny to pull me around trying to start that junk we had for cars when we were in our married years, you let the clutch in slowly. Ginny "popped" the clutch on my uncle's old Chevie truck, which resulted in ripping the front bumper off. She wept. I cursed. I had a heluva time getting her to pull a cranky junker again. I should have edited the earlier comment. I should have written, in our EARLY married years. She has never forgotten this incident.

I bet she's never forgotten it! Towing vehicles is a whole topic all by itself. I've done that a few times, and it's not an experience I care to repeat, thank you very much.
